Cat calorie calculator
Use this cat calorie calculator to find out how many calories does a cat need each day, then how much to feed a cat using the calorie count on your food’s label.
Free calculator · Based on vet sources
This is a starting estimate. Cats vary, so weigh your cat every few weeks and ask your vet before starting a weight loss plan. Losing weight too fast is dangerous for cats.
How many calories does a cat need?
Vets start with the resting energy requirement (RER): 70 × body weight in kg to the power of 0.75. That number is multiplied by a factor for life stage, from 0.8 for weight loss to 3.0 for young kittens. A typical spayed or neutered adult needs about 1.2 × RER.
| Cat weight | Calories a day (neutered adult) |
|---|---|
| 3 kg (7 lb) | 191 kcal |
| 4 kg (9 lb) | 238 kcal |
| 5 kg (11 lb) | 281 kcal |
| 6 kg (13 lb) | 322 kcal |
Feeding for weight loss
For weight loss, vets usually base calories on your cat’s ideal weight, not their current weight, and aim for slow, steady loss of about 1% of body weight a week. Choose “Weight loss” above and enter the ideal weight your vet recommends.
