How to choose a cat friendly vet
Cats hide pain, and a stressful visit can push up heart rate and blood sugar enough to change test results. A clinic that knows cats gets you a calmer visit and a better exam.
- Ask about a cat-only waiting area, exam room or appointment times
- Look for AAFP/ISFM Cat Friendly Practice or Fear Free certification
- Ask where they send patients after hours, and save that number
- Ask for an itemized estimate before tests or treatment
Cat Friendly Practice (AAFP and ISFM)
Clinics work through a checklist that covers cat-only or separated waiting and exam areas, gentle handling without scruffing where possible, equipment sized for cats and staff trained in feline behavior. Certified clinics are listed on the program’s own site.
Fear Free
A training program for vets, nurses and whole clinics to lower fear and stress during visits: treats and pheromones, towels to hide under, exams in the carrier, and medication before the visit for very nervous cats.
