How to find a cat friendly vet
Cats hide pain and stress easily, so a calm visit gets you a better exam. Two programs train clinics for this. A Cat Friendly Practice (run by the AAFP and ISFM) has met a checklist that covers cat-only handling, equipment and staff training. Fear Free certification trains vets and nurses to lower fear and stress during handling. Neither is a guarantee, and many good clinics have neither, so ask the clinic directly. None of the clinics on this page are checked by CatsMed for either program.
What to bring to a new vet
- Your cat in a hard carrier with a towel over it. Leave the carrier out at home for a few days first.
- Past vet records and vaccine dates, including rabies.
- The names and doses of any medications, flea or worm treatments your cat takes.
- What and how much your cat eats, and any changes in appetite, thirst or litter box habits.
- Photos or a video of the problem if it comes and goes, like coughing or limping.
